Hospital Helps Empower Women in Fight Against Breast Cancer
DALLAS, TX - Parkland Health &
Hospital System's Cancer Prevention and Intervention program along with
Paul Quinn College will co-host the “Black Women Making a Difference in
the Fight Against Breast Cancer” conference.
The event will take place Friday, Oct. 1 and Saturday, Oct. 2 at Paul
Quinn College , 3837 Simpson Stuart Road , Dallas .
A free event for all women, Friday night will feature a breast cancer
survivor style show and tribute. The evening's events begin at 6 p.m.
Please RSVP by Wednesday, Sept. 22.
Saturday, a no-cost health fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. will provide women
the opportunity to receive mammography, blood pressure, cholesterol and
diabetes screenings. Prostate cancer screenings also will take place for
men who attend the event.
“This is an excellent opportunity for women and men to make sure they
have no health problems,” said Vickie Henry, Parkland health educator.
“Too often people wait too long before receiving any type of health
exam, and with cancer the sooner it's detected the better chance of
survival.”
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and is the
second leading cause of death among African-American women. One in eight
women in the United States has a lifetime risk of developing the
disease.
Health fair participants also can take part in a panel discussion on “A
Holistic Approach to Wellness” that will begin at 8:30 and end at 10
a.m. on Saturday.
