January - Cervical Cancer Screening Month
Some facts about Cervical Cancer:
Every year in the United States, about 10,520 women get cervical cancer
Every year in the United States, about 3,900 women die from cervical cancer.
50% of the cervical cancers in the United States occur in women who have
never been screened. 60% of these cancers occur in women who have not had
a pap smear within 5 years of the diagnosis.
A virus-the human papilloma virus (HPV) causes almost all cases of cervical
cancer.
HPV is a common sexually transmitted virus that usually goes away by itself.
Most people with HPV never even know they have it.
All women who are sexually active or are at least 21 years old should have
an annual Pap and pelvic examination. Source: Association of Women's Health,

January - Glaucoma Awareness Month
Between two and three million people suffer from glaucoma. Nearly half do
not know they have the disease since it causes no early symptoms. Glaucoma
may lead to vision loss or even blindness. There is no cure for glaucoma,
but it can be controlled.

January - Birth Defects Prevention Month
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), birth
defects are present in one of every 33 babies born in the United States.
That translates to about 120,000 babies born each year. Birth defects are
the leading cause of death in children less than 1 year of age, causing
one in every five deaths.

An estimated 27 million Americans are affected by thyroid disease, more
than the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes and cancer combined.
the thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism in essentially every
organ, tissue and cell in the body, thyroid disease requires expert monitoring

January - National Volunteer Blood Donor
Month
Every day in our country, approximately 38,000 units of blood are required
in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer
and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the
lives of accident victims.
